The International Cricket Council (ICC) plans to reject Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) plea to relocate their T20 World Cup 2026 group-stage matches from India to Sri Lanka, instead proposing Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram as alternative venues.
The BCB cited escalating security concerns between India and Bangladesh, triggered by fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman’s release from IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders on BCCI advice. Bangladesh’s matches are currently slated for Kolkata and Mumbai, with less than four weeks until the tournament begins February 7 in India and Sri Lanka. BCB president Aminul Islam indicated earlier rejection of Chennai, pending government approval, while demanding direct assurances from Indian authorities.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia clarified Monday that the board has received no formal communication from ICC on venue shifts, deeming it outside their purview. “The BCCI has not received any information… It is a matter between BCB and ICC,” Saikia said emphasizing BCCI’s readiness to comply if directed as co-host.
ICC’s response, expected imminently, may reference Bangladesh umpire Sharfuddoula Saikat’s recent officiating in India to counter security claims. Tamil Nadu and Kerala associations have signaled openness to hosting, with Chepauk Stadium boasting available pitches.
The row intensified post-Mustafizur’s IPL exit, prompting BCB’s formal letter despite no “concrete security threat” identified yet. Pakistan reportedly offered to host Bangladesh’s games, but Sri Lanka remains unlikely.
As teams arrive early February for warm-ups, urgency mounts to resolve the impasse dominating headlines. Bangladesh insists on government-level talks, potentially delaying final schedules.
