Veteran Malayalam actor Mohanlal has been honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2023, recognising his iconic contribution to Indian cinema. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced this accolade on September 20, 2025, stating that the award will be presented to the 65-year-old actor on September 23 at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony in New Delhi.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India’s highest film honour, instituted in 1969 to commemorate the legacy of Dadasaheb Phalke, the father of Indian cinema. It honours individuals for their outstanding and enduring contributions to the growth and development of Indian cinema.
Mohanlal, born in 1960 in Kerala, began his acting career in the late 1970s and quickly rose to prominence with his breakthrough role in “Rajavinte Makan” (1986). With a career spanning over four decades, he has acted in more than 360 films across Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi languages. Known for his versatility and unmatched talent, Mohanlal has received numerous accolades, including five National Film Awards and Kerala State Film Awards. He was also honoured with the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2019.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Mohanlal, describing him as an epitome of versatility and a leading light of Malayalam cinema and theatre. Modi also praised Mohanlal’s deep passion for Kerala’s culture and his significant performances across various Indian film industries.
Expressing humility, Mohanlal said the award belongs to everyone who has supported him throughout his journey, including his family, colleagues, and fans. His cinematic legacy continues to inspire generations, setting a golden standard in Indian film history. The award ceremony will mark a momentous occasion celebrating Mohanlal’s exceptional artistic achievements and contribution to Indian cinema.
