The International Cricket Council (ICC) has named Sanjog Gupta as its new Chief Executive Officer, marking a significant moment for both the global cricket body and Indian sports administration. Gupta, a prominent figure in sports media, officially assumed the role on July 7, 2025, becoming the seventh CEO in ICC history.
Gupta’s appointment follows a comprehensive global search that attracted over 2,500 applicants from 25 countries. The ICC Nominations Committee, led by Deputy Chairman Imran Khwaja, shortlisted 12 candidates before unanimously recommending Gupta. ICC Chairman Jay Shah highlighted Gupta’s “extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialisation,” calling it “invaluable for the ICC” as the organization seeks to expand cricket’s global footprint and strengthen its Olympic ambitions.
Prior to joining the ICC, Gupta served as CEO – Sports & Live Experiences at JioStar and previously headed the sports division at Disney Star. His career began in journalism before he rose through the ranks of sports broadcasting, where he played a key role in multi-language, digital-first, and women-focused coverage. Gupta is widely recognized as an architect of India’s modern sports ecosystem.
Gupta’s leadership comes at a pivotal time for the ICC, which is aiming to “move beyond traditional boundaries” and make cricket a “regular sport in the Olympics,” according to Shah. The board expressed confidence that Gupta’s “deep understanding of the global sports and media landscape, combined with his passion for technology and the cricket fan’s perspective,” will drive the sport’s growth in both established and emerging markets.
Gupta replaces Geoff Allardice, who had served as ICC CEO since 2021. The appointment also underscores India’s growing influence in international cricket governance, with Gupta being the first Indian media executive to lead the ICC.
