Shaikh Hassan Khan is a climber from Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram who has completed the ‘7 Summits Expedition’ i.e., the highest peaks of the 7 continents. He is currently stuck on Mount Denali in Alaska. Shashi Tharoor, the MP from Thiruvananthapuram, has written a letter requesting the External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar to help rescue the young climber.
Shaikh Hassan, who is from Tharoor’s Lok Sabha constituency, is stuck in North America for a while. Tharoor has requested Jaishankar to look into the “precarious and life-threatening situation” the climber finds himself in. He has also requested that Jaishankar ensures that India works with the American counterparts to help Shaikh Hassan out in this dire state.
MP Tharoor posted a letter on his X handle and wrote, “Sadly, the heroic young explorer is now stranded on Mount Denali. My urgent request for help from the Foreign Minister and our diplomats in the US.”
Tharoor stated that as per the reports Shaikh Hassan was currently ascending Mount McKinley to promote a campaign supporting global peace. The campaign also celebrates the successful Operation Sindoor carried out by the Indian Armed Forces. Tharoor expressed his distress as the young Indian was struck in a life-threatening situation.
The Congress MP has asked the ministry to look into the matter with urgency. Tharoor also stated that he will be available for any help that the ministry requires throughout the process of rescuing the young climber.
Tharoor had previously acknowledged the climber in a post he made 8 months ago. In a post on his official social media account, he complimented the climber at length stating that he is the first Keralite and probably the first Indian to climb the highest peaks of seven continents on Earth. He achieved this feat when he ascended Australia’s highest mountain, Mount Kosciuszko, on November 10, 2024.
