Bollywood’s biggest star Shah Rukh Khan and his wife are one of the most loved and iconic couples of the industry. The couple got married on 25th October 1991 and have been together for the past 33 years. While talking about their reception in a throwback episode of the ‘Farida Jalal’ show, SRK revealed how some of the elders of his family discussed whether Gauri would change her religion.

Shah Rukh Khan married his wife Gauri a year before his film saw the big screen. Back then it was a big deal as both of them were of different religions. SRK revealed that his whole family and people around speculated whether his wife would change her name along with her religion and become a Muslim.

“I remember when their whole family, old-fashioned people, were sitting there, whispering in Punjabi, ‘Will he change the girl’s name? Will she become a Muslim?’” SRK said.

SRK being the witty star decided to play a prank on his whispering relatives as he instructed his wife Gauri, “Put on your ‘burqa’ and let’s read the namaaz now.” All his relatives were shocked at the sudden change in agreement as he continued, “From now on, she will wear a burqa all the time, never leave the house, and her name will be Ayesha.”

Everyone around was taken aback by the sudden change in tone before realising that he was joking with them. He further said, “I had a lot of fun, but the lesson in all of this was that one should respect religion but it should not come in the way of love. But, it was a great wedding and it’s still going strong.”

SRK stated that he and his wife don’t discuss the Hindu-Muslim in their household and will never plan on doing so. He is a muslim and his wife is hindu and he thinks that his kids are ‘Hindustan’.

The movie star is currently shooting for his next movie ‘King’ in which he will star alongside his daughter, ‘Suhana Khan’ for the first time ever. The film’s star cast includes Shah Rukh Khan, Suhana Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, Jaideep Ahlawat, Abhay Verma, and Arshad Warsi in key roles.
