The whole fiasco around the leadership in Bangladesh has caused a ruckus in the subcontinent. Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been staying in India after fleeing from her home country and has been addressing Bangladeshi citizens from India.

The current interim leader of Bangladesh, Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, was at Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London. He revealed that he had requested the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the matter and limit Hasina from speaking to Bangladeshi people. Her speech from India is doing nothing but inciting the sentiments of Bangladeshi citizens and transfers their anger and hatred to India.

“The whole anger and everything is now transferred to India, because she went there. Not only is she living there, but the problem is, when I had a chance to talk to Prime Minister Modi, I just simply said, ‘You want to host her? I cannot force you to abandon that policy, but please help us in making sure she doesn’t speak to Bangladeshi people, the way she is doing’,” Mr. Yunus said.

Yunus also claimed that Hasina’s speech from India is doing nothing but a move to enrage the nation. He also emphasised that PM Modi’s move of letting it pass by and doing nothing is making this all a volatile situation for both the nation and striking huge blows to their relationship.

Yunus claimed, “She announces on such and such day at such and such hour, she will speak, and the whole of Bangladesh gets very angry, the way she is speaking. Why is she keeping this whole anger thing inside of us now? And is India doing what you asked? No. Mr Modi’s answer, I quote, he said, ‘It’s the social media, we cannot control it’. What can you say? It’s an explosive situation. You can’t just walk away by saying its social media. So, this is what is still going on.”

Sheikh Hasina fled to India after she was forced to leave her country on 5th August 2024 and seek refuge in India. This wasn’t a first-time thing for Hasina as she stayed with her sister in Delhi back in 1975 when her father and the then Bangladeshi President Mujibur Rahman was assassinated.
