Rono Mukherjee passes away at the age of 83

The famous Bollywood director, Rono Mukherjee passed away on Wednesday May 28th at the age of 83, due to a cardiac arrest. Brother of the actor Deb Mukherjee, Rono was best known for his directorial ventures like Haiwan in 1977 and Tu Hi Meri Zindagi in 1965.

Rono Mukherjee was part of a well-renowned family in Bollywood, he was the uncle of veteran bollywood actresses Kajol and Rani Mukerji. He had three children, daughter Sharbani and two sons Siddharth, and Samrat Mukerji. He was also the uncle of famous bollywood director Ayan Mukerji and actress Tanishaa Mukerji.

The late great director’s last rites were performed at the Santa Cruz Hindu Crematorium by his eldest son Smarat Mukerji. The final rites were attended by his family members, Sharbani Mukherji, Samrat Mukerji, Siddharth Mukerji, Kajol, Tanishaa Mukerji, and Ayan Mukerji.  There were other notable well-wishers also present there including Bharat Dabholkar, Rego B, Rema Lahiri, Gobind Bansal, and Bappa Lahiri, who all came to pay their last respects to Rono Mukherjee.

Rono was the eldest of the Mukherjee brothers – Shomu Mukherjee (Kajol’s father), Subbir Mukherjee, Joy Mukherjee, and Deb Mukherjee. His younger brother Deb also passed away earlier this year on March 14th. Deb Mukherjee was the father of Ayan Mukerji who is another renowned filmmaker from the Mukerji house. Deb Mukherjee was best known for his work in films like Karate (1983), Kaminey (2009) and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992).

The brothers belonged to the Mukherjee-Samrat family who have helped shape the Indian film industry for over 4 generations and their contributions date back to the 1930s.
