The Indian economy has been on a growing spree in recent years. Niti Aayog had its 10th meeting of the Governing Council after which the CEO of Niti Aayog, BVR Subrahmanyam addressed the media. He stated that the overall geopolitical and economic environment of the world currently favors India. Along with that he also announced that India has officially overtaken Japan as the fourth largest economy in the world.

He said, “We are the fourth largest economy as I speak. We are a USD 4 trillion economy as I speak. It is only the United States, China and Germany which are larger than India, and if we stick to what is being planned and what is being thought through, in 2.5-3 years, we will be the third largest economy.”

Mr. Subrahmanyam also commented on the recent statements of the President of the United States, Donald Trump. Mr Subrahmanyam clarified, “What the tariff will be, is uncertain. Given the dynamics, we will be a cheap place to manufacture.” He also mentioned that they are preparing a new round of the government’s asset monetisation plan. This plan will most probably be announced in August this year.

Trump had stated very clearly that the Apple iPhones which will be sold in the states should be manufactured in the US. He said that he doesn’t want the iPhones manufactured in India or any other place to be sold in the US. This statement has come after there were reports claiming that Apple is planning to up the manufacturing in India and is planning to sell more iPhones made in India in the US market.
