The Mumbai Indians secured the last remaining playoff berth in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 after a commanding 59-run victory over the Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday. With this win, Mumbai joined Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings in the knockout stage, setting the stage for an exciting finish to the league.
Mumbai’s triumph was effectively a virtual quarter-final, with both teams vying for the crucial fourth spot. Batting first, Mumbai Indians posted a formidable total, which proved too much for Delhi Capitals, who faltered in their chase and fell well short. The win propelled Mumbai to 16 points, making it mathematically impossible for Delhi to surpass them, even if Mumbai lose their final league match.
This marks the 11th time Mumbai Indians have reached the IPL playoffs, keeping their hopes alive for a record-extending sixth title. The franchise previously lifted the trophy in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.
The playoff lineup is now set, with Gujarat Titans leading the table at 18 points, followed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings, both on 17 points. While the top four are confirmed, the battle for the coveted top-two spots — which offer two chances to reach the final — remains intense. Gujarat Titans can extend their lead to 22 points if they win their remaining matches, while RCB and Punjab Kings are also in contention for a top-two finish.
Delhi Capitals, left on 13 points after their 13th match, will play their final fixture against Punjab Kings, but the outcome will have no bearing on the playoff race.
With the league stage concluding on May 27, all eyes are now on the playoff schedule and the race to the IPL 2025 title. Fans can expect high-octane clashes as the top four teams battle for supremacy and the coveted trophy.
