Indian cricket has been in a frenzy with their captain retiring and the reports of their best and most experienced player contemplating his decision to discontinue playing the red ball format. In a previous report, the news came out that Virat Kohli had told the Board of Control for Cricket in India that he wants to retire from the Tests, but the board has asked him to reconsider his decision.
As the reports suggest, BCCI is trying to figure out ways to persuade Kohli to reconsider his decision to retire. They have decided to bring in a highly influential figure in Indian cricket to convince the 36-year-old veteran to not retire. The board has also said that they want Kohli to prolong his career and especially considering the England tour that is just around the corner.
As per BCCI officials this highly influential figure was also called in to speak to Rohit Sharma, the former Indian test captain. Although they had a conversation, Rohit’s stance on retirement didn’t budge and he announced the news through his social media platform. The BCCI are hoping that nothing similar happens with Kohli and they are able to convince him to stay.
The Indian Test side is currently in a state of turmoil as they are looking for their next captain to fill Sharma’s role in the side. Shubhman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant are spearheading the race currently and will be given the responsibility to lead India against England. The team will want Kohli to be there with the team to provide veteran leadership as well and they will need their most experienced batter to be there in the tough English conditions.
The 5-match test series will start on 20th June 2025 and will mark the beginning of a new Test Championship cycle for India. The Indian team has been in the finals of 2 out of the 3 Test Championships played till now but has not managed to clinch the title on both occasions.
After losing the Border Gavaskar Trophy and not qualifying for the finals of Test Championship last year there were questions raised on Rohit Sharma’s leadership and Virat Kohli’s form as both players didn’t have a great series. While Sharma has called it a day on his career in the longer format, the team awaits Kohli’s decision.
