Dr. Mumtaz Patel has been elected as the President of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) in the United Kingdom. Patel is the first woman of Indian origin to hold this prestigious position in the college’s 500-year history. Her election marks a significant milestone for diversity and inclusion in the medical field.
Dr Patel is a consultant nephrologist based in Manchester. She is currently RCP senior censor and vice president for education and training and has been acting as president since June 2024. She is known for her contributions to improving patient care and her leadership in various medical organizations. She has also served as the registrar at the RCP and has been actively involved in shaping healthcare policy.
The Royal College of Physicians, founded in 1518, is a professional body for physicians. Its main goal is to improve the quality of healthcare. The RCP plays a vital role in setting standards, providing training, and advocating for doctors and patients.
Patel’s election has been widely celebrated by the Indian diaspora in the UK and by medical professionals worldwide. Many see her as a role model and an inspiration.
