A window of opportunity has emerged for India and Canada to mend their strained relationship, spurred by a change in Canadian leadership and evolving geopolitical dynamics. With former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s departure, marked by disputes over Canada’s stance on Khalistani separatists and allegations against India, a fresh start appears possible.

Canada’s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has signaled a willingness to improve relations with India, and India has reciprocated with openness to reconciliation. This shift comes amid challenges posed by the US administration, creating shared concerns for both nations. Canada seeks to diversify its economic reliance on the US, while India aims to mitigate the impact of US tariffs, incentivizing closer cooperation.

Trade discussions could be revitalized, with India potentially benefiting from Canada’s abundant natural resources. Furthermore, Canada’s strategic position in the Arctic presents collaboration opportunities as nations vie for resources in the region.

A significant indicator of improving relations would be an invitation for Prime Minister Modi to the upcoming G7 summit in Canada. Modi has been invited to every G7 summit since 2019; an invitation to this year’s summit, coupled with the reinstatement of ambassadors in each other’s capitals, would signify a positive trajectory for India-Canada relations.

In an era of unpredictable US policies, closer ties between India and Canada are increasingly vital for both nations’ strategic interests and economic stability.
