Indian cities represent an extraordinary tapestry of diversity, according to Nadia Verjee, Executive Director of Expo City Dubai. Speaking during a recent forum, Verjee highlighted India’s urban landscape as a global marvel, showcasing unparalleled cultural, economic, and demographic variety.
India is home to over 7,935 cities and towns, each with its unique identity rooted in centuries of history, language, and tradition. From bustling metropolises like Delhi and Mumbai to emerging hubs such as Aligarh and Bikaner, the nation’s urban centers reflect a dynamic blend of modernity and heritage. Delhi, for instance, stands as a microcosm of India’s multicultural ethos, housing landmarks like the Red Fort alongside thriving multinational corporations.
Verjee emphasized how India’s cities are not only diverse but also pivotal to global urban development conversations. Through initiatives like the Smart Cities Mission and partnerships such as the Memorandum of Understanding between FICCI and Expo City Dubai, India is actively shaping sustainable urban policies. These collaborations aim to address challenges like climate resilience and infrastructure development while fostering international cooperation.
Expo City Dubai itself serves as a model for such collaboration, hosting events like the Asia Pacific Cities Summit in October 2025. Verjee noted that India’s participation in these forums underscores its commitment to innovation and sustainability. She praised Indian cities for their ability to integrate diverse stakeholders—businesses, policymakers, and innovators—into cohesive ecosystems that drive growth.
India’s urban diversity extends beyond demographics to economic geography. By 2025, metropolitan clusters across 183 districts will account for 77% of the nation’s incremental economic growth. This highlights the critical role cities play in shaping India’s future as a global economic powerhouse.
