In 2024, Singapore witnessed a significant political transition with Lawrence Wong taking office as the country’s new prime minister in 20 years, succeeding Lee Hsien Loong. Wong, a member of Singapore’s ‘4G’ leadership, was sworn in on May 15, vowing to lead with humility and dedication to the nation’s 5.9 million citizens.
Wong’s administration is marked by an emphasis on continuity and stability, with Lee remaining in the cabinet as a senior minister. His leadership comes at a time of evolving international relations, particularly with India.
On September 4-5, 2024, Wong hosted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Singapore, where both leaders elevated their bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This partnership aims to enhance cooperation across various sectors including trade, technology, and security. The leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress made over the years and discussed future collaboration in emerging fields like semiconductors and digital technologies.
As both nations prepare to celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations in 2025, the strategic partnership is seen as a pivotal step towards deepening economic ties and fostering cultural exchanges. Wong’s leadership is viewed as an opportunity to strengthen Singapore’s role in regional dynamics while enhancing its relationship with India amidst a rapidly changing global landscape.
