Israeli forces are reportedly utilizing an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) weapons system, known as Arbel, in their ongoing military operations in Gaza. This system has been co-produced with the Indian defense company Adani Defense & Aerospace, marking a significant collaboration between the two nations in the realm of military technology.

The Arbel system transforms conventional machine guns and assault rifles into sophisticated computerized weaponry that enhances the lethality and accuracy of Israeli soldiers on the battlefield. According to reports, it employs algorithms designed to improve target acquisition and reduce collateral damage, thereby increasing the chances of hitting intended targets efficiently. This technology was first unveiled at a defense expo in Gandhinagar, India, in October 2022, and has since been integrated into Israeli military operations following the escalation of conflict after the attacks on October 7.

Critics have raised serious ethical concerns regarding the deployment of such AI systems in warfare. Advocacy groups argue that the use of AI in military contexts poses significant risks to human rights and civilian safety. The Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) denounced Israel’s use of AI weapons as a blatant violation of international treaty obligations aimed at mitigating risks associated with AI technologies. The Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence, signed by Israel in September 2024, was intended to govern AI systems to protect human rights; however, its application appears contradictory given the current military actions in Gaza.

The collaboration between Israeli and Indian defense firms has drawn attention not only for its technological advancements but also for its geopolitical ramifications. As Israel continues its military operations in Gaza, the role of AI in warfare is likely to remain a contentious issue.
