The Indian Navy’s historic sailing expedition, Navika Sagar Parikrama II, reached a significant milestone as the crew of the INSV Tarini docked in Fremantle, Australia, after an exhilarating 39-day journey covering approximately 4,900 nautical miles. This ground-breaking voyage features two remarkable women officers, Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Roopa A, who are not only navigating the high seas but also charting a new course for women in naval operations.

The expedition was flagged off from Goa on October 2, 2024, coinciding with the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations. The officers embarked on this ambitious mission to circumnavigate the globe, aiming to demonstrate India’s maritime capabilities while promoting gender equality and sustainability within the naval forces. Upon their arrival in Fremantle on November 9, the officers were greeted with enthusiasm and admiration from local dignitaries, Indian expatriates, and members of the Australian Navy.

The docking in Perth marks a significant achievement not just for the officers but for the Indian Navy as a whole. The expedition is part of a broader initiative to empower women in traditionally male-dominated fields. Lieutenant Commander Dilna K expressed her excitement about reaching Australia, stating, “Australia is beautiful! The landscapes are breath taking, and we are thrilled to be here after such a long journey at sea.”

The significance of this expedition extends beyond mere navigation; it serves as a powerful statement about women’s capabilities in the armed forces. The Indian Navy has been at the forefront of promoting gender equality within its ranks. By sending women officers on such high-profile missions, the Navy aims to break stereotypes and encourage young women to consider careers in defense services.

Mayor of Fremantle, Hannah Fitzhardinge, welcomed the sailors with open arms: “We are honored to host these brave women who are not only representing India but also serving as role models for aspiring young leaders everywhere. Their journey exemplifies courage and determination.”

As they prepare for their next leg of the journey, both officers remain committed to their mission’s core values: empowerment, sustainability, and adventure. They plan to engage with local communities along their route to share their experiences and inspire future generations.
