Devotees gathered at Dubai’s Al Mamzar Beach on November 8, 2024, to celebrate Chhath Puja, a significant festival dedicated to Lord Surya (the Sun God) and Chhati Maiya. The celebration at Al Mamzar Beach attracted a diverse crowd of devotees, primarily from the Indian community, including many expatriates from Bihar. Families set up colorful stalls adorned with flowers, fruits, and traditional offerings.
On the final day of the festival, known as “Usha Arghya,” devotees performed rituals at sunrise. They waded into the water to offer prayers and ‘arghya’—a sacred offering of water—to the rising sun. This ritual symbolizes gratitude for the sun’s life-giving energy and is believed to bring blessings for health and prosperity. The event also showcased a strong sense of community among the attendees. Many families traveled from different parts of the UAE to participate in this auspicious occasion.
Local authorities ensured that the event was well-organized and safe for all participants. Security personnel were present to manage the crowd and ensure a smooth flow of activities. Additionally, arrangements for waste management were made to keep the beach clean after the festivities.
As the sun rose higher in the sky, devotees sang traditional songs and danced joyously, celebrating their faith and cultural heritage. Chhath Puja serves as a reminder of the importance of nature in people’s lives. The rituals performed during this festival highlight a deep respect for environmental elements, particularly water and sunlight.
In recent years, Dubai has become a hub for various cultural celebrations due to its diverse population. As the day progressed, devotees shared meals together, reinforcing their communal ties. Traditional dishes like ‘thekua’ (a sweet snack) and seasonal fruits were enjoyed by all.
