Indian tourist arrivals in Singapore surged by 13% in the first nine months of 2024, totalling 898,180 visitors, making India the third largest tourist-generating market for the city-state after Indonesia and China. This surge is indicative of a broader trend of recovery in the tourism sector, particularly following the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023 alone, Singapore welcomed over 1.1 million Indian tourists, marking a substantial rebound from previous years. This resurgence can be attributed to several factors, including improved flight connectivity, targeted marketing campaigns, and the easing of travel restrictions that had previously hampered international travel.
The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has played a pivotal role in this recovery by launching initiatives aimed at attracting Indian travellers. These initiatives include promotional campaigns that highlight Singapore’s diverse offerings, from its rich cultural heritage to its modern attractions and culinary delights. The STB has also collaborated with travel agencies and airlines to create attractive travel packages tailored specifically for Indian tourists.
Moreover, Singapore’s reputation as a safe and family-friendly destination resonates well with Indian travellers. The city-state offers a unique blend of cultural experiences, shopping opportunities, and world-class attractions such as Universal Studios Singapore, Gardens by the Bay, and Sentosa Island. The ease of navigating the city with its efficient public transport system further enhances its appeal. As Singapore gears up for the year-end festivities, the STB anticipates that visitor numbers will continue to rise. Orchard Road, Singapore’s famous shopping street, is set to be a focal point for celebrations during this period. The area is expected to attract four to five million visitors, drawn by vibrant decorations, festive events, and exclusive shopping deals.
Cultural ties between India and Singapore also play a crucial role in boosting tourism. With a significant Indian diaspora residing in Singapore, many Indian tourists feel a sense of familiarity when visiting. Festivals such as Diwali are celebrated with great enthusiasm in Singapore, drawing visitors who wish to partake in these vibrant cultural experiences.
