Kunal, who had dreams of studying in Canada, now faces uncertainty as his sister reports on increasing challenges for international students, including stricter work-hour limits imposed by the Canadian government. This situation is further complicated by Canada’s recent decision to reduce international student permits by 10% for 2025, a move that could significantly affect the influx of students from Punjab, who make up about 70% of the total Indian students going to Canada for study.
Families are also worried about their loved ones already residing in Canada. Arvind Sharma, whose son is a permanent resident there, expressed fears that visiting him might become increasingly difficult due to the strained diplomatic relations. He stated that the diplomatic standoff has made it uncertain for him to secure a visa to visit his son.
The economic implications are also significant. Local businesses that typically benefit from visits by Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) are bracing for a downturn. Inderpal Singh, a travel agent in Kapurthala, noted that the waiting period for visitor visas has already stretched to four to six months and is expected to increase further due to the ongoing tensions. Shop owners in Punjab are anxious about the potential decline in business as many NRIs may defer their visits amid rising uncertainties.
The broader context of this diplomatic rift stems from allegations made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding India’s involvement in the assassination of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
