Shadab Alam, a third-generation artisan, has witnessed firsthand the transformation of this trade. His family, alongside many others in Varanasi, has been pivotal in establishing the city as a hub for military insignia manufacturing. After the GI tag was introduced, our orders surged, leading to increased employment opportunities, Alam shared.
The badges produced in Varanasi are not just decorative; they symbolize pride and honor for military personnel. The artisans meticulously craft these emblems, which are supplied to various countries, including France, Germany, and Kenya, showcasing the global reach of their products. Reports indicate that the local manufacturers receive between 5,000 and 10,000 orders annually, a testament to the demand for their high-quality craftsmanship.
The rise of these badges aligns with India’s broader “Make in India” initiative, which aims to boost domestic manufacturing and promote indigenous products on the global stage.
