Indo-Canadian actress Nitasha Sharma has publicly responded to Rishab Shetty’s recent remarks, which criticized Bollywood for its portrayal of India. In an interview, Shetty, a prominent figure in Kannada cinema, expressed his belief that Bollywood often presents a negative image of India, particularly at international film festivals. He emphasized his pride in showcasing his nation positively through his work.
Sharma, however, strongly disagrees with Shetty’s assessment. She stated, “For me and millions of other Indians living abroad, be it Bollywood or regional cinema, they have majorly portrayed our country in a positive light and very close to what it is. Bollywood will never portray India negatively.” She believes that such criticisms can sometimes be exaggerated, leading to immediate reactions that may not reflect the broader reality.
Having lived in Canada for an extended period, Sharma noted that Bollywood films play a significant role in connecting the Indian diaspora with their roots. “Cinema means Bollywood for many people here,” she explained, highlighting that Indian films have consistently entertained and engaged audiences across generations. She added that regional films, including Punjabi and South Indian cinema, have also gained popularity, catering to a large audience in the West.
Sharma’s own experiences in the film industry reinforce her perspective. Her Punjabi film Honsla Rakh (2021) and music videos, such as “Chann” with Babbu Mann, have received positive responses in North America. “People there watch a wide range of cinema being made in India, whether for digital platforms or theaters, and trust me, we love it,” she asserted. This enthusiasm for Indian cinema, she believes, fosters a desire among the diaspora to revisit their homeland.
Moreover, Sharma’s debut film, Rautu Ka Raaz, which premiered on ZEE5, has also garnered international viewership, winning her fans in Canada. She expressed pride in the way her work has been received abroad, stating, “While traveling back, I got to witness the way film was liked by many.”
The actress also pointed out that Indian actors, including Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, have a significant following in the West, further illustrating the global appeal of Indian cinema.
