Indian American organizations and U.S. advocacy groups have expressed their support for the appointment of Vinay Kwatra as India’s new ambassador to the United States. They are eager to collaborate with him to strengthen the bilateral relationship.

Kwatra, a seasoned diplomat and former foreign secretary, was named to the position on Friday. The role had been vacant since Taranjit Sandhu’s retirement in January. Kwatra brings extensive experience in international relations, having previously served in key diplomatic roles, including as ambassador to France and Nepal, and has a background in handling U.S. and China relations.

Indiaspora, a prominent Indian American organization, has congratulated Vinay Mohan Kwatra on his appointment as the next Indian Ambassador to the United States. Kwatra, a seasoned diplomat with over 30 years of experience serving India, will take on this new role after previously serving as the Foreign Secretary of India.

Mukesh Aghi, president and CEO of the US-India Strategic and Partnership Forum (USISPF), welcomed Kwatra to Washington and expressed optimism about working together to elevate the US-India partnership to new heights. Indiaspora also looks forward to collaborating with Ambassador Kwatra to strengthen and grow the US-India relationship.

Kwatra’s appointment comes at a crucial time, with numerous challenges awaiting him, including managing bilateral tensions and navigating a potential shift in US administration. However, his seasoned diplomacy and strategic acumen are expected to bolster India’s presence and influence in Washington, reinforcing the importance of strong ties between the two democracies.

Atul Keshap, president of the US India Business Council (USIBC), extended warm wishes to Ambassador Vinay Kwatra as he returns to Washington, D.C., a city familiar to him where he has significantly contributed to enhancing bilateral relations. Keshap expressed enthusiasm for collaborating closely with Kwatra to strengthen trade and economic ties, ensuring ongoing growth and cooperation between the United States and India.

Kwatra’s extensive diplomatic background includes serving as India’s envoy to France from 2017-2020, Ambassador to Nepal from 2020-2022, and Minister (Commerce) at the Indian Embassy in Washington D.C. from 2010-2013. He has also held key positions in China, Russia, and the Prime Minister’s Office. As Foreign Secretary, Kwatra skillfully navigated India’s foreign policy through significant geopolitical challenges. He oversaw the historic State Visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Washington in June 2023 and strengthened ties between the two countries.
