Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited Russia for two days to attend the 22nd India-Russia annual summit, which was closely monitored by the West due to the ongoing Ukraine conflict. As per the reports, The Biden Administration has stated that India will remain a crucial ally for the US, despite apprehensions regarding its relationship with Russia.
Pentagon Press Secretary Major General Pat Ryder told reporters at a news conference that, “India and Russia have had a relationship for a very long time. From a US perspective, India is a strategic partner with whom we continue to engage in full and frank dialogue to include their relationship with Russia. As it relates to the NATO summit being this week, of course, like you, the world is focused on that.”
India has consistently upheld its strong “special and privileged strategic partnership” with Russia, ensuring that the relationship remains robust even amidst the Ukraine conflict.
India has not condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and has continuously advocated for resolving the conflict through discussions and diplomatic efforts.
Ryder also said, “Prime Minister Modi recently met the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and offered his assurances that India will continue to do everything within its means to support a peaceful solution to the war in Ukraine.”
In discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Prime Minister highlighted that resolving the Ukraine conflict through military means is not feasible and underlined the importance of promoting peace initiatives.
India has always supported its special and strategic partnership with Russia amidst the Ukraine conflict. On July 9, PM Modi was also honored with the top civilian award from Russia.
