From 5 to a record 12 Punjab-origin politicians entered the UK’s House of Commons. The Labor Party registered a historic victory in the parliamentary elections. Of the 12 MPs, which includes six women, 11 belong to the Labour Party while Gagan Mohindra is from the Conservative Party. The names are Preet Kaur Gill from Birmingham Edgbaston, Seema Malhotra from Feltham-Heston, Tanmanjeet Dhesi from Slough, Satvir Kaur from Southampton, Harpreet Kaur Uppal from Huddersfield, Sonia Kumar from Dudley, Warinder Juss from Wolverhampton West, Jas Atwal from Ilford South, Jeevun Sandher from Loughborough, Kirith Ahluwalia from Bolton North East, Gurinder Singh Josan from Smethwick and Gagan Mohindra from South West Herts.
“An honour and a privilege to be re-elected again as an MP for Birmingham Edgbaston. Thank you to everyone who put their trust in me. I will continue to serve the people and place I love,” Preet Kaur Gill wrote on X. Her father Daljit Singh was the longest-serving president of Guru Nanak Gurdwara at Smethwick, which was the first Sikh shrine in the UK.
Although Rishi Sunak, the Indian-origin Prime Minister, lost the general election, the British-Indian community has registered a thumping win with 26 Indian-origin candidates emerging victorious in the 2024 general election in the UK. This election in the UK saw a record number of 107 Indian-origin candidates contest the polls.
