Buta Singh Gill, builder and Gurudwara President shot dead in Edmonton

Buta Singh Gill, an Indian-origin construction company owner, was shot dead at a construction site in Canada’s Edmonton city. Gill was a prominent member of a Sikh Gurudwara temple in the city and had “strong ties to the Punjabi community”.

Another person, whose identity was not immediately known, was also killed in the daytime shooting which took place on Monday in the city’s Cavanagh area.

According to reports, Gill owned Gill Built Homes Ltd., a luxury home building company based in Edmonton.

Edmonton police said that Southwest Branch patrol officers responded to the report of a shooting in the area of Cavanagh Boulevard Southwest and Cherniak Way Southwest. It said that the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is investigating the death of two men in southwest Edmonton.

According to police, “At approximately 12:00 p.m. today, Monday, Apr. 8, 2024, Southwest Branch patrol officers responded to the report of a shooting in the area of Cavanagh Boulevard SW and Cherniak Way SW.” “Upon police arrival three injured males were located. EMS responded and determined two males, a 49-year-old and a 57-year-old were deceased, and a 51-year-old male was seriously injured. Paramedics transported the surviving male to hospital with serious life-threatening injuries,” it added.

Speaking at the scene, former city councilor Mohinder Banga said that Gill, who he had known for several years, was shot dead while he was checking on his workers at the construction site.
