Huge Garba night held in Paris as the traditional Indian dance receives UNESCO Certificate of Inscription

Garba, the celebrated dance form of India received the Certificate of Inscription in Paris. The traditional dance form of Gujarat was inscribed on the ‘Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’ in December.

PM Narendra Modi wrote on X, “Garba is a celebration of life, culture and devotion. It also brings people together. It is gladdening to note that Garba’s global popularity on the rise!” He further said, “Sometime ago, Garba found a place in the @UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. I am glad that the Certificate of Inscription was presented a few days back in Paris. At the same time, a memorable Garba Night was also held in Paris, which was attended by the Indian community in large numbers.”

A large Indian community participated in the event filling the atmosphere with joy and vigor.

Garba name is derived from the Sanskrit term Garbha. Many traditional garbas are performed around a centrally lit lamp or a picture or statue of the Hindu goddess Durga. Garba is a dance that honors, worships, and celebrates the feminine form of divinity. Traditionally, the dance is performed by women in a circle around a clay lantern with a light inside, called a garbha deep.
