Kerala has taken an innovative tech-driven step by introducing its first generative AI teacher, Iris. This initiative marks a significant advancement in the integration of artificial intelligence in education. Unveiled at a school in Thiruvananthapuram, Iris is a humanoid designed to enhance the learning experience for students.

The robot, based on generative AI, and created by Maker Labs is ‘poised to redefine the learning landscape’. Built under the Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) project initiated by NITI Aayog, Iris boasts a range of features aimed at revolutionizing traditional teaching methods.

The robot can teach subjects from nursery to Class 12 and currently speaks three languages – English, Hindi and Malayalam, and the developers are planning to expand this to over 20 languages. With the ability to speak three languages and tackle complex questions, Iris offers a personalized learning journey for each student. Its features include voice assistance, interactive learning modules, manipulation capabilities, and mobility, making it an invaluable asset in the classroom.

The students are finding the robot so interesting that there are zero absentees in the classes taken by the AI teacher.

Equipped with an Intel processor and dedicated coprocessor, it ensures an immersive learning experience. Powered by Robotics and Generative AI technologies, Iris promises seamless performance and responsiveness.
