Naveen Havannavar, a 42-year-old technology professional, has been elected to US politics by being elected to the Pittsford Town Council in Rochester, New York. Havannavar becomes the first person of Indian origin to secure such a position, thereby marking a momentous occasion for the Indian-American community in New York.

Havannavar is a technology manager with over 20 years of experience leading diverse engineering teams at companies like Paychex and Xerox. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree (BSc) in Maths, Physics, and CS, as well as a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) in Marketing & Systems. He says, “I strive to make a positive impact on my community by utilizing my professional skills and knowledge as an advisor to various non-profit and community boards. I currently serve as the Chairperson at the India Community Center, Council Member on New York State Hate and Bias Prevention Board, and Community Advisory Board Member on WXXI/Little Theater.”

Havannavar announced his candidacy in January 2023 and emerged victorious in a primary election by a razor-thin margin of three votes in June. His campaign trail was marked by traditional grassroots tactics, including door-to-door canvassing, social media outreach, hosting events, distributing mailers, and making personalized phone calls to voters. These efforts culminated on Election Day, November 7, where Havannavar clinched a win, largely attributed to the strong local and Indian American community support.

“I believe in giving back and contributing to society. I believe that by being actively involved and engaged in my community, I can help make it a better place for my family and all the families who call it home,” he writes on his website.

Havannavar is a graduate of the Leadership Rochester Class of 2023 and been awarded Rochester Business Journal’s Forty Under 40 award, which recognizes professional success and community service.
