The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced additional honorees for the TIFF Tribute Awards at this year’s Festival. Brazilian filmmaker Carolina Markowicz will receive the TIFF Emerging Talent Award presented by MGM Studios recognizing her impactful work. Markowicz, who has gained recognition through her short films, returns to the festival with the World Premiere of Toll. Her debut feature Charcoal premiered at TIFF in 2022.

Łukasz Žal, the Polish cinematographer known for his outstanding contribution to cinema and entertainment, will receive the TIFF Variety Artisan Award. Žal’s acclaimed cinematography will be showcased in The Zone of Interest, a film awarded the Grand Prix at Cannes. His work has earned him acclaim and nominations, notably for Cold War and Ida.

Both awardees will be celebrated on September 10 at the TIFF Tribute Awards Gala fundraiser and their creative contributions continue to impact the global film landscape.

Hong Kong artist Andy Lau will also be honored with a Special Tribute Award at the World Premiere Gala presentation of The Movie Emperor, marking his return to the festival after more than 2 decades. Lau, a multi-talented figure, has made significant contributions to Asian cinema over a career spanning 4 decades.

TIFF’s CEO, Cameron Bailey, expressing excitement over honoring Lau, Markowicz and Žal, praised Lau’s legacy and Lau and Žal’s impact on cinema.

The Gala serves as TIFF’s major annual fundraiser and supports the Viola Desmond Cinema campaign this year. The honorees reflect the festival’s commitment to recognizing exceptional talents in the film industry.

The Gala’s history of success as a fundraiser, raising $1.3 million in 2022, aligns with the shared commitment of TIFF and Bulgari to support arts and culture.
