77th Independence Day of India: Indian flag flies high in Washington

The celebration of India’s Freedom in the US reflects the talent pool of over 4 Mn Indian diaspora

Taranjit Singh Sandhu, the Indian Ambassador to the United States, hosted the 77th Independence Day celebrations at India House in Washington, DC. The grand celebrations included Ambassador Sandhu paying floral tributes at the Mahatma Gandhi memorial and raising the Indian national flag in the presence of Indians, diaspora members, and our American friends.

Praising over 4 million strong Indian Diaspora, including 200,000 Indian students in the US as a key pillar of the India-US relationship, he said, “Their talent, entrepreneurial spirit, and innovation contribute to the prosperity of both India and the United States and serve to strengthen the relations.”

“The commemoration of 75 years of Independence being marked as the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ culminate, and the country continues her march into the Amrit Kaal- the journey into the next quarter century, towards 100 years of independence,” Ambassador Sandhu emphasized. He remarked that this year’s Independence Day celebrations are special as it coincides with India’s G20 presidency, which is guided by the ethos of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.’

During the celebration, Ambassador Sandhu emphasized that under the leadership of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden, the India–US partnership today is “one of the most consequential relationships” in the world.

The patriotic fever engulfed the venue with a cultural program unfolding with the rendition of patriotic songs depicting India’s diversity presented by the young Indian Diaspora from the Gandharva School of Music. The winners of the painting competition organized by the Embassy on the theme of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ were felicitated while  The ‘Meri Maati Mera Desh’ and ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaigns were commemorated with a display of a large handcrafted Indian Tricolor.
