James Parks Morton Interfaith Award goes to Uma V Mysorekar

The Interfaith Center of New York (ICNY) has conferred an India-born experienced medical professional Uma V. Mysorekar as a proud recipient of the 2023 Interfaith Award in recognition of her treasured community service. She will be honored at Interfaith Center’s annual gala in New York on June 26, 2023, along with fellow recipients of the award.

Mysorekar is a medical graduate from Bombay University, and she hails from Bengaluru. A successful Gynaecologist and Oncologist since 1970, she has dedicated her time to several social and cultural organizations in varying roles. She has been awarded the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor for 2009 and was featured in the prestigious publication “The Women who made New York” authored by New York Times columnist Julie Scelfo, in recognition of her community service.

Former US Presidents Clinton and Bush had invited Mysorekar to represent Hinduism at Interfaith Conference sponsored by the White House. Further, she was one of the select few high-profile Asians chosen as the representative of 1.8 million Hindus of this Continent at a special inter-religious gathering to meet and greet the revered head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI during his visit in 2008. She was a prominent representative of various faiths chosen to participate in the National Prayer Service in Washington, following the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th president of the US.

Mysorekar is actively working for the welfare of impoverished women, disabled, and orphaned in India. In the US, she is focusing on addressing the psychological and emotional concerns of Indian youth, growing up under the influence of dual cultures led by the Hindu Temple Society of North America.
