“Everywhere I go, I’ve heard loud and clear from employers across the country who are experiencing chronic labour shortages” says Fraser. “These changes to the Express Entry system will ensure that they have the skilled workers they need to grow and succeed. We can also grow our economy and help businesses with labour shortages while also increasing the number of French-proficient candidates to help ensure the vitality of French-speaking communities. Put simply, Canada’s immigration system has never been more responsive to the country’s social or economic needs.”

According to the minister, enabling IRCC to send out more invitations to qualified individuals in these particular professions will help Canada meet its objective of attracting in-demand employees to all of its areas. Draws under the new categories are expected to start later this summer.

As a result of recent changes to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, category-based draws are expected to begin this year. These changes allow the minister to select immigrants based on key attributes that support Canada’s economic priorities.

The categories were chosen in accordance with legal requirements that the Minister take part in open consultation with provinces and territories, business leaders, labour advocates, unions, employers, and organisations that provide services for settling immigrants.

Earlier, the government of Canada announced that it will provide an opportunity for international students who have been victimized by fraud to present evidence in support of their case as well as to demonstrate their situation.

As a result of fake admission offer letters to educational institutions, the Canadian Border Security Agency (CBSA) deported more than 700 Indian students in the past few months.

Fraser stated that recent complaints of bogus acceptance letters were being aggressively investigated by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

“To be clear: Our focus is on identifying culprits, not penalizing victims. Victims of fraud will have an opportunity to demonstrate their situation & present evidence to support their case,” Fraser said in a tweet.

Express Entry is Canada’s flagship application management system for those seeking to immigrate permanently through the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, the Canadian Experience Class and a portion of the Provincial Nominee Program.
