Mughal-E-Azam the musical gives a glimpse of show with iconic song at Times Square

As India’s Greatest Motion Picture, Mughal-E-Azam, is now set to storm American cities as a grand musical in a three-month-long tour, the team gave a glimpse of the show with the performance of an iconic song from the movie at Times Square in New York on Wednesday.

The Mughal-E-Azam musical will be performing in major cities that include New York, Chicago, Dallas, and Seattle. The Indian musical sensation Mughal-e-Azam will have its opening show of its North American tour at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. The team will have three performances this weekend.

Based on the iconic 1960 Bollywood blockbuster of the same name, the play is the first of its kind Broadway-musical phenomenon from India. As we all know how much Americans love Broadway, it is needless to say how much they are going to enjoy this musical epic.

The stage version of “Mughal-e-Azam” premiered to rave reviews in Mumbai in 2016, and has since played international cities including Dubai and Kuala Lumpur. Following its opening weekend in Atlanta, the North American tour is scheduled to play cities including New York, Chicago, Dallas, and Seattle.

Directed by Feroz Abbas Khan and produced by Shapoorji Pallonji Group, the musical centers on the love story between a prince and a court dancer, a relationship which anger’s the prince’s father leads to conflict between the two. The original film, directed by K. Asif, was a huge success when it opened in theaters in 1960, breaking box-office records and becoming one of the most important and influential Indian films in history.  

The play showcases India’s rich culture of Kathak dances and classical music intertwined in a legendary love story.

The 13-city tour kicks off in Atlanta on Friday, May 26 with stops set for New York, Chicago, Toronto and more.
