Councillor Amanda Yeung Collucci, Ward 6, Councillor for Markham, has set up a $25,000 student scholarship for York University to encourage students to study hard and give back to society. As a graduate of York University, Collucci tells her story of how she changed her own destiny through learning and shares her understanding of education as not being only about high grades, GPA, books and homework, but also about dreams for families, children, young people and many others.

According to Collucci, education gives people the courage to pursue their dreams, live a better life, be a better person and contribute to society. “I often say that businesses, big and small, are the engine of the economy. Now I must add: Education is the foundation of our society,” says Collucci who called business owners and individuals to make their own donations in support of capital funding for building York University’s Markham Campus as she presented the cheque to York University.

“Today, I am pleased to give the actual $25,000 endowment to York University to set up this scholarship to students for years to come.”
The award was established under the Councillor’s leadership through the 2023 Markham Spring Gala with the belief that education is the foundation of the society, shaping the present and future of the community. This award will establish a lifetime scholarship to benefit students for years to come – to help fulfill the HOPES and DREAMS of youth, children and families.

This award will benefit incoming undergraduate students pursuing a Bachelor in Fine Arts in Creative Technologies at Markham Campus. Preference will be given to students focused on the future of media entrepreneurship and/or digital justice, specifically ensuring ethical developments in artificial intelligence. “This award is for students who dare to dream, dare to take a leap for a better and brighter future and shape our society,” says Councillor Collucci.
“We are very grateful for Councillor Collucci’s continued support of Markham Campus and our future students,” said Dr. Gordon Binsted, deputy provost of York University’s Markham Campus. “Not only will this award further the hopes and aspirations of students in our Creative Technologies program, but it will also drive positive technological and entrepreneurial changes in Markham’s thriving arts community.”
