We need serious, competent people in charge, who listen to experts, and make difficult decisions to save lives and the environment of a forward-looking state like California. NOT Trumplicans who will take us backward

South Asian American immigrants come here to pursue the American economic dream, and because they want to raise their children in a society based on science, the rule of law and meritocratic principles. These dreams are under threat in the Newsom recall election in California, a power play by the Republican minority to overrule the majority in an off-year election at a cost of $270 million to California taxpayers.

Newsom shares South Asian American values on issues like pandemic management, climate change, voting rights, high technology, immigration, the economy and gun control. The US Senate is at stake: if Senator Feinstein is unable to continue, a Republican governor would appoint a Republican Senator, flipping the US Senate to Mitch McConnell.

Governor Newsom listened to scientists and made difficult, life-saving decisions, during an unprecedented global pandemic. This cost him politically, but kept California hospital bed capacity below failure levels. As a front-line physician, I appreciate all that he has done to promote easily available COVID vaccinations which prevented our summer 2021 surge from resembling the catastrophic numbers in Republican states like Florida or Texas.

Newsom left discretionary power about school and work reopening rules to local authorities, unlike many red state governors who chose to make school reopening unsafe by blindly opposing mask and vaccine mandates. He supported small businesses and extended unemployment benefits to keep the economy going.

Newsom proposed bold ideas to address homelessness and housing shortages in California. During the pandemic, he creatively bought out hotels with large vacancies to house homeless people and prevent COVID outbreaks in crowded shelters. Governor Newsom is sincere about taking on climate change while creating new jobs that will boost our economy. Our worst deficits occurred under Republican governors while record surpluses accompanied our most recent Democratic governors.

We need serious, competent people in charge, who listen to experts, and make difficult decisions to save lives and the environment of a forward-looking state like California. NOT Trumplicans who will take us backward.

Let’s keep Governor Newsom in office by voting “No” on the Recall. To prevent someone with a tiny percentage of votes replacing Newsom, every eligible voter needs to vote. Republicans will turn out in force to vote for the Recall. It’s important that we stop them!
