This year’s Diwali celebrations in New Jersey were marked not just by lights and laughter, but by compassion and community spirit. The non-profit organization Save Indian Farmers (SIF) hosted its much-anticipated Diwali Mela on October 11th, successfully combining festivity with philanthropy to raise vital funds for farmers affected by recent floods in India.
The full-day cultural event turned into a vibrant celebration of Indian heritage, featuring continuous entertainment, shopping, and family activities—all for a cause that resonated deeply with the diaspora community. Organizers announced that the fundraiser surpassed its goals, making it one of SIF’s most successful community events to date.
The Mela offered a dazzling lineup of over 25 live performances, ranging from Bollywood and classical dance numbers to soulful singing and instrumental recitals. A special highlight was a Mallakhamb demonstration, showcasing the traditional Indian sport’s unique blend of strength and grace.
Adding a poignant touch to the day, the Prayog Theater Group performed a moving street play titled “Swarg Me Kisan” (“A Farmer in Heaven”), which left the audience reflecting on the struggles and sacrifices of India’s farmers.
Beyond the stage, the venue buzzed with activity as families explored stalls featuring authentic Indian food, jewelry, clothing, and handcrafted gifts. More than 15 vendors participated, turning the fairgrounds into a colorful bazaar. Children enjoyed creative moments at DIY stations, decorating paper lanterns, rangoli, and diyas, adding a joyful sparkle to the event’s community spirit.
SIF’s representatives expressed heartfelt gratitude to the attendees, artists, and sponsors whose enthusiasm made the event a success.
“The turnout and energy from the community were truly humbling,” said a spokesperson for Save Indian Farmers. “Because of everyone’s generosity, we can immediately begin deploying funds to provide relief to farming families devastated by the recent floods.”
While the Mela marked a major milestone in community outreach and fundraising, organizers emphasized that the need for continued support remains critical. Donations will continue to fund emergency relief and long-term rehabilitation projects for rural communities struggling to recover from natural disasters.
