The President of the United States, Donald Trump has not stopped his tariff wrath and has announced that he is planning on imposing a 100% tariff on all films made outside the US. The US leader made a post on his social media platform Trust Social accusing other countries of “stealing America’s movie-making business like candy from a baby.”

This announcement by Trump has shocked and puzzled the global film industries especially India due to its major stake in the North American market. Many film makers from the Indian film industry have expressed their disbelief and astonishment over Trump’s decision with many pointing out that most of the Hollywood films are shot outside the US.

Director Kabir Khan stated that Trump’s statement was too unclear and even took a sly dig at Trump stating that he might not remember the tariff he plans the next day he wakes up.

“I have no idea what he means when he says ‘made outside of the United States’ because every second Hollywood film is shot outside the USA, and the VFX is executed outside the USA. And a tariff on what? The ticket price? His statement is too broad to be understood properly. Firstly, let’s see if he remembers this tomorrow when he wakes up,” said Kabir Khan.

National Award-winning filmmaker Pan Nalin didn’t agree with Trump’s statement that American movie business was being stolen. He said, “I do not agree with President Trump; the American movie business has not been stolen, and going by the trend in the first nine months of 2025, it has never been so robust since the pandemic. Just look at Warner Brothers – their second-quarter revenues increased modestly from last year to Rs 869 crore (USD 9.8 billion).”

OMG 2 famed director Amit Rai highlighted that cinema and movies should not be bound within borders, languages, and politics. He noted, “When a story is created, it demands its own space naturally. And if this move is being done because they want to make America great and bring back its old identity, then every country in the world has an equal right to think the same way. In that case, the whole world order will collapse.”
