The tentative list of the United Nations Economic Social and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCO’s) World Heritage of India has seen seven new properties being added to them. The Permanent Delegation of India to UNESCO stated that the inclusion of these 7 new properties notes that India is committed to preserving and conserving the rich cultural heritage that its land possesses.

The new additions included the Deccan Traps at Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar (Maharashtra); Geological Heritage of St Mary’s Island Cluster (Udupi, Kamataka); Meghalayan Age Caves (East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya); Naga Hill Ophiolite (Kiphire, Nagaland), as per the statement of the Permanent Delegation of India to UNESCO .

In a post on their social media account this Friday, on September 12, India at UNESCO, wrote, “The Permanent Delegation of India to UNESCO is happy to announce that India’s 7 properties have been added to the Tentative List of UNESCO’s World Heritage Convention.”

After the addition of these new properties to the tentative list of UNESCO’s World Heritage of India, the total number of Indian properties on the tentative list has reached 69. Out of the 69 properties 49 come under the Cultural category, 3 under the Mixed category while 17 falls under the Natural category.

The statement also highlighted why the addition of the properties to the list is important, stating, “Addition to the Tentative List is a mandatory requirement before the inscription of any property on the World Heritage List. We thank the Archaeological Survey of India for its diligent work.”
