Amazon announces its first manufacturing line in India

Amazon said it will begin the manufacturing operations in Chennai in partnership with Foxconn’s subsidiary Cloud Network Technology.

The announcement followed after a meeting between Senior Vice President, Amazon India Amit Agarwal, and Minister of Information and Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad.

On Tuesday, Amazon announced that it will launch its first manufacturing unit in India later this year. The line will be set up in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and will manufacture Amazon Fire TV Stick devices every year. It said that the decision reaffirms its commitment to the Indian government’s “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” and “Make in India” initiatives.

The e-commerce giant also said that it will invest $1 billion to digitize 10 million small and medium businesses, help businesses in India sell worldwide enabling $10 billion in cumulative exports, and create 1 million jobs by 2025. 

According to an Amazon blog post, Amazon will begin the manufacturing operations in Chennai in partnership with Cloud Network Technology, which is a subsidiary of Foxconn. It also stated that it will continuously evaluate the scaling capacity of the manufacturing unit to additional marketplaces and more cities depending on the domestic demand.

The announcement came after a meeting between Senior Vice President, Amazon India Amit Agarwal, and Minister of Information and Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Prasad said: “We welcome Amazon’s decision to set up a manufacturing line in Chennai, as it will enhance domestic production capacities, and create jobs as well. This will further our mission of creating an Atmanirbhar Bharat which is digitally empowered.” Agarwal said that this announcement reiterates Amazon’s commitment to the Indian government’s vision of an “Aatmanirbhar Bharat ” as well as the “Make in India” initiative.
