Veteran actor Sanjay Dutt has sparked a debate in the film industry after stating that Bollywood has lost its passion for cinema, contrasting it with the vibrant enthusiasm he finds in South Indian film industries. Dutt made these remarks during the teaser launch of his upcoming Kannada film, KD – The Devil, in Mumbai on Thursday.
Speaking candidly to the press, Dutt explained his recent preference for roles in South Indian films, saying, “I take back the passion (from Tollywood), which Bollywood has lost. And I hope it comes back. That’s what I miss back home, the passion to make a good film.” He emphasized that Bollywood is now driven by numbers and box office figures, whereas in the South, the focus remains on storytelling and dedication to the craft.
Dutt, who has recently taken on pivotal roles in Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu cinema, criticized Bollywood for its failure to learn from a prolonged box office slump. He urged filmmakers to shift their focus from commercial metrics to creating content-driven films that resonate with audiences nationwide. He called on Bollywood to rediscover its roots and rekindle the passion that once defined the industry.
