There were a lot of questions on the Indian team after the loss in the first test and with the unavailability of lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah many wrote them before the start of second test. But India has shocked everyone, registering a monumental victory and defeating the English team at their fortress in Edgbaston. With their huge victory the team broke many records and achieved heights that none have scratched before them.
India defeated England for the first time ever at the famed Edgbaston ground. India had played 8 matches at the ground before this one and had drawn 1 match while losing the other 7. The team led by Shubman Gill did the unthinkable and made history becoming the first Asian team ever to win a Test match against England at Edgbaston.
Indian team won the match with a humongous margin of 336 runs which is their biggest victory ever in terms of runs. They broke their previous record of 318-run triumph against the West Indies in North Sound in 2019. Their previous best in England was back in 1986 when they defeated the English team at Leeds by a margin of 279 runs.
Shubman Gill, the Man of the Match, had a performance for the ages and recorded a legendary win as the first Test victory of his career. He became the youngest captain ever to win a Test match overseas surpassing the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. The newly appointed Indian captain achieved the milestone at the age of 25 years and 301 days old.
Gill also became the first Asian batter ever to score a double century in England with his knock of 269 in the first innings. He also became the first batsman ever to score a double hundred and 150 in a single test match. His aggregate score of 430 runs in this match became the most runs any Indian batter has scored in a Test match and the second most all around standing just behind English legend Graham Gooch (456 runs against India at Lord’s 1990).
With a remarkable batting performance led by their captain Shubman Gill, for the first time in the history of Indian cricket the team crossed the 1000-run mark in a single test match. They scored a total of 1014 runs in the match and only 5 teams had managed to cross the 1000-run mark before India.
Akash Deep who replaced Jasprit Bumrah had an outstanding game as well and his figures of 10 wickets for 187 runs is now the best bowling figures for any Indian player on English soil. He took 4 wickets in the first innings and took a 6-wicket haul in the second innings of the match bowling exceptionally well.
