An ambitious project is in the works to construct a ground-breaking underwater train connecting Dubai and Mumbai, spanning an impressive 2,000 kilometers. This futuristic initiative, aims to enhance connectivity between the two vibrant cities and foster economic ties.
The proposed train will not only serve as a passenger carrier but also facilitate the transportation of goods, including oil and freshwater. With speeds projected between 600 to 1,000 km/h, the underwater rail network promises to significantly reduce travel time compared to current options. Abdulla Alshehi, managing director of National Advisor Bureau Limited, emphasized that this project represents a dual benefit: India will export excess freshwater from the Narmada River while receiving oil from the UAE.
The underwater train concept was initially introduced in 2018 and needs detailed planning for a feasibility study. Its design features panoramic windows that will allow passengers to enjoy breath taking views of marine life during their journey. Travel enthusiasts are already dubbing it the “Deep Blue Express,” envisioning it as a major tourist attraction.
However, this mega-project faces several challenges such as immense costs associated with construction and engineering solutions for deep-sea travel. Safety concerns and psychological effects of underwater travel could deter potential passengers. Rajesh Verma, a Mumbai based entrepreneur, expressed his reservation about deep-sea travel despite the allure of such an innovative transport option.
As the UAE continues to push technological boundaries, this underwater train could position it as a leader in futuristic infrastructure. If completed before similar projects like Saudi Arabia’s NEOM city, it may redefine regional competition in innovation.
Overall, while the Dubai-Mumbai underwater train is still in its conceptual phase, its potential impact on tourism and bilateral trade could be transformative for both nations. The feasibility studies and public confidence will play crucial roles in determining whether this visionary project becomes a reality.

This is a very good project. We pray that Allah Almighty will grant it success. In addition, the Dubai-Karachi project can also be very successful in the future because Dubai’s thinking is very well developed in the world and we see it as very advanced and very strong in development work.
