Ashleen Khela, a 12-year-old Australian-born Indian girl, has been recognized as the youngest published female author in Australia. Recently, she was awarded the prestigious “New South Wales Woman of the Year” award in the “Ones to Watch Age 7-15” category. This honor was bestowed upon her for her remarkable philanthropic efforts, particularly through the proceeds of her two books, which support underprivileged children worldwide.

Ashleen’s journey into writing began at the age of eight, inspired by her encounters with migrant workers’ children in Punjab during a family visit to India. Her debut book, “17 Stories,” published at age 11, not only made her Australia’s youngest female author but also raised funds for charitable causes. She self-funded the publication by recycling bottles and cans and selling plants from her backyard.

Her second book, “Journey Through Her Jersey,” published in December 2024, addresses gender biases and aims to empower women. All proceeds from both books are donated to charities such as the Starlight Children’s Foundation and Cancer Council Australia, as well as to underprivileged children in India and other developing nations. Ashleen’s philanthropic work has earned her international recognition and additional awards, including the “Young Citizen of the Year 2025 Award” from the Hills Shire Council.

Ashleen’s achievements have been commended by high-ranking officials, including NSW Minister for Women Jodie Harrison and NSW Governor Margaret Beazley. Her dedication to helping others through her writing has set a remarkable example for young people worldwide. Despite her young age, Ashleen has already made a significant impact on the lives of many underprivileged children, providing them with essential items like laptops, clothing, and educational materials. Her story serves as an inspiration, highlighting the potential of young individuals to drive positive change through creativity and determination.
