External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar commenced a six-day official visit to the United Kingdom and Ireland on March 4, aiming to bolster India’s diplomatic and economic partnerships with both nations.
In the UK, Jaishankar will engage in discussions with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and other senior officials, focusing on advancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries. This partnership spans key areas such as defense, trade, education, health, and people-to-people ties. Talks are expected to include the ongoing negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and regional issues like the Ukraine conflict. Jaishankar will also meet members of the Indian diaspora during his stay in London.
The visit follows recent high-level interactions between India and the UK, including British Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds’ trip to New Delhi last month. These engagements underline efforts to finalize the ambitious FTA and deepen bilateral cooperation across sectors.
From March 6-7, Jaishankar will travel to Ireland, where he is scheduled to meet Irish Foreign Minister Simon Harris and other dignitaries. Discussions will focus on strengthening bilateral relations rooted in shared democratic values, cultural ties, and growing economic engagement. He will also interact with the Indian community in Ireland.
The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that this visit aims to provide renewed momentum to India’s ties with both nations amid evolving global geopolitical dynamics. The trip is part of India’s broader outreach to Europe, following Prime Minister Modi’s recent engagements with EU leaders.
Jaishankar’s visit underscores India’s commitment to fostering strategic partnerships globally while addressing pressing regional and international challenges.
