India’s geopolitical landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, particularly in the Middle East, as it recalibrates alliances to enhance its strategic interests. Historically, India has maintained a strong stance in support of Palestine, advocating for its rights on various international platforms. However, recent developments indicate a burgeoning partnership with Israel, driven by mutual interests in defense, technology, and economic cooperation.
Since establishing formal diplomatic relations with Israel in 1992, India has gradually expanded its engagement with the Jewish state. The relationship has evolved significantly over the years, particularly under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration. High-level visits, bilateral agreements, and joint initiatives have strengthened ties between the two nations.
The I2U2 forum—comprising India, Israel, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and the United States—exemplifies this strengthened partnership. Launched in 2021, this initiative aims to foster collaboration on various fronts, including food security, clean energy, and technology. India’s recalibration of alliances is also driven by economic considerations. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are among India’s largest trading partners, with significant investments flowing into sectors like energy, infrastructure, and technology.
The recent signing of the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) is a testament to India’s commitment to deepening economic ties with Arab states. This agreement aims to boost bilateral trade to $100 billion over five years and highlights India’s strategic intent to diversify its economic partnerships in the Middle East.
India’s approach must be nuanced; it cannot afford to alienate traditional allies in the Arab world or undermine its moral authority on issues related to human rights. The recent escalation of violence between Israel and Palestine further complicates this balancing act. India’s response to such crises will be closely scrutinized by both domestic and international audiences.
