Malaysia has recently expanded its visa-free travel initiative, now including China and India, alongside countries like the United States, United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia. This policy allows Indian and Chinese nationals to visit Malaysia without a visa for up to 30 days until December 31, 2026. The move aims to bolster tourism and economic growth, aligning with Malaysia’s preparations for its ASEAN chairmanship in 2025 and the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign.
Datuk Awang Alik Jeman, Secretary-General of Malaysia’s Ministry of Home Affairs, emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance Malaysia’s appeal as a travel destination. The country already welcomes visitors from 167 nations, reflecting its commitment to accessible tourism. This expansion is expected to significantly increase tourist arrivals from India and China, which are among Malaysia’s top five source markets.
The visa exemption is designed not only for tourism but also for short-term business visits, requiring travelers to show proof of sufficient funds and a return ticket. Since the introduction of the visa exemption in December 2023, Malaysia has seen a remarkable increase in Indian tourists, with over 1 million arrivals recorded in 2024—marking a 71.7% increase from the previous year.
This initiative is part of Malaysia’s efforts to recover from the pandemic’s impact on its tourism sector. By simplifying travel processes, Malaysia aims to attract more international visitors, thereby supporting local businesses and enhancing economic growth. The government anticipates that these measures will solidify Malaysia’s position as a leading destination in Southeast Asia.
The inclusion of China and India in Malaysia’s visa-free travel initiative underscores a strategic commitment to fostering global ties and enhancing tourism. This policy not only simplifies travel but also reflects Malaysia’s ambition to become a key player in the international tourism landscape.
