Vanita Gupta will be the highest-ranking Indian American at the Department of Justice if the US Senate confirms the nomination.
President-elect Joe Biden yesterday formally nominated Indian American civil rights attorney Vanita Gupta as Associate Attorney General, the third highest position in the US Department of Justice.
Biden has also nominated federal appeals court judge Merrick Garland as Attorney General, Lisa Monaco as nominee for Deputy Attorney General, and Kirsten Clarke as nominee for Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division.
Gupta will become the highest-ranking Indian-American at the Department of Justice if the US Senate confirms the nomination. Biden described the four individuals as “first-rate nominees” who will restore the independence at the justice department.
Vanita Gupta, 46, is currently serving as President and CEO of the leadership conference on civil and human rights.
Gupta tweeted, “I am honored to return to a Justice Department that will push every day for justice, accountability, and equality under the law. It will not be enough to simply restore what has been undermined or lost. This moment demands bold leadership, and that is what we will bring.”
Vice President-elect Kamala Harris also expressed what the four nominations bring to the table.
