Farmers unions on Wednesday announced that they are to hold a “tractor march” on January 7 as a continuation of their agitation against the new farm laws and called it a “rehearsal” for January 26. Samyukta Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of 40 farmer unions, is organizing it. The tractor march constituting 4,000 to 5,000 tractors will march on the Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways around Delhi.
Several groups of farmers joined the protest at the Delhi borders ahead of the tractor rally.
The Indian newspaper The Hindu reported that the farmers had also stated that a large number of people from the villages in Haryana and Punjab were on their way to join the protests.
Farmers and the government failed to reach an understanding during the last round of deliberation held on January 4. The farmers have previously threatened the government about a tractor rally on Republic Day on January 26 if it fails to repeal the three farms laws.
