In a landmark decision that underscores India’s commitment to bolstering national security, India has approved two major defense initiatives: the construction of two nuclear-powered submarines and the acquisition of 31 MQ-9B Predator drones from the United States. This dual announcement, made by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marks a significant step in India’s military modernization efforts and its strategic posture in the Indo-Pacific region.
The budget for the nuclear submarines is valued at approximately Rs. 40,000 Crore and will be executed at the Ship Building Centre in Visakhapatnam. This initiative is part of India’s long-term strategy to enhance its indigenous defense production capabilities. The submarines aim to significantly augment India’s underwater warfare capabilities, allowing for greater operational flexibility and deterrence.
In tandem with the submarine project, India has also approved the purchase of 31 MQ-9B Predator drones at an estimated cost of around $4 billion. These unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are renowned for their high-altitude endurance, advanced surveillance capabilities, and precision strike options. The Indian Navy will acquire 15 units, while both the Army and Air Force will receive eight drones each.
The acquisition of Predator drones comes at a time when regional tensions are escalating, particularly in light of China’s advancements in drone technology and its assertive maritime activities in the South China Sea and Indian Ocean. The Predator drones are expected to enhance India’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities significantly.
With their ability to conduct long-range missions and gather real-time data, these drones will provide Indian forces with a critical edge in monitoring adversarial movements and executing precision strikes against strategic targets.
Both defense deals carry substantial geopolitical implications. As India navigates a complex security environment characterized by rising threats from neighboring countries, particularly China and Pakistan, these advancements will bolster its deterrent posture. The nuclear submarines will enhance India’s second-strike capability, ensuring that it can respond effectively to any potential aggression.
Moreover, the acquisition of advanced drones aligns with India’s broader strategy of enhancing its defense ties with the United States.
