‘Namaste Bhaiyo aur Behno, main aapka dost Ameen Sayani bol raha hoon…this legendary voice may not echo ever now as radio announcer, Ameen Sayani, whose voice was loved by many for years, breathed his last at the age of 91. He achieved fame and popularity all across the Indian Subcontinent when he presented his Binaca Geetmala program over the airwaves of Radio Ceylon. He was one of the most imitated announcers even today.
Sayani suffered a heart attack on Tuesday night and was rushed to Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital. His death was confirmed by his son, Rajil Sayani. Sayani had produced and compered a record 54,000 programs.
He was born in Mumbai on 21st December, 1931. Known as the ‘Grand Old man of Radio’, he gained immense popularity for his show Binaca Geetmala. This program had started in the year 1952 and was on air till 1994. Apart from radio, he had also acted in movies like Bhoot Bangla, Teen Deviyan etc.
The funeral will be held in Mumbai on 22nd February.
